Transit & Mobility

Brockton Area TransitTransportation planning attempts to facilitate the movement of people, goods, and services. The most efficient systems will have a diverse array of transportation options. While the majority of transportation is by private automobile, the OCPC region has a number of transit providers.

Bus Service: OCPC works closely with the Brockton Area Transit, which serves the Greater Brockton Area. GATRA, the Greater Attleboro and Taunton Regional Transit Authority, operates the Plymouth Area Link (PAL), which offers bus service in Plymouth and Kingston, as well as the Seaside Area InterTown Line (SAIL), which connects Pembroke and Kingston in our region to the neighboring communities of Duxbury and Marshfield. Other private providers of bus service, such as Plymouth and Brockton and Bloom, make regularly scheduled stops at points within the region. Additionally, the South Shore Community Action Council (SSCAC) operates transit services for disadvantaged citizens.

Rail: In 1997, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) brought Commuter Rail to the region. The Middleboro/Lakeville line extended this service through the OCPC communities of Bridgewater and Brockton, and on to South Station in Boston. The Plymouth/Kingston line established stations in six OCPC towns: Plymouth, Kingston, Halifax, Hanson, Whitman, and Abington. OCPC is involved in planning efforts related to the proposed South Coast Rail project.

Old Colony Human Services Coordination Plan: The Coordination Plan provides a framework to assist community leaders, human services agencies, and public transit agencies to coordinate and improve transportation services in the region and beyond. The Coordination Plan assesses the existing transportation needs and services in the region, identifies unmet needs or service gaps, and presents a prioritized list of strategies to address those needs. By focusing on coordination strategies that use existing resources, the Coordination Plan aims to improve county residents' access to transportation in a cost-effective manner.
